Everything you need to know about Audit1's insurance premium automation platform.
What is Audit1?
Audit1 is a Fintech meets Insurtech platform that automates workers' compensation premium audits and calculations at the penny level. We connect insurance carriers, employers, and payroll companies on one seamless infrastructure.
How does Audit1 integrate with payroll providers?
Audit1 connects to any payroll provider and handles data normalization instantly. Smart technology provides integrations with all available data transfer protocols and formats. We make it easy to connect to any payroll provider.
How does the Audit1 premium calculation engine work?
Our multi-phase validation engine reviews the class codes, states reported and instantly compares to the policy data to verify accuracy. The officer inclusion and exclusion selections are gathered from the policy and used in accordance with state rules.
Does Audit1 offer a customized portal with my brand?
Yes. All users (carriers, auditors, payroll providers, agencies, accounting firms, and employers) can configure their portal including a unique domain, favicon, logo, colors, and fonts. Our AI handles DNS provisioning, SSL and deployment automatically which means you can get started in minutes versus months.
What are the benefits of Audit1?
Enhanced workflow and reporting capabilities. Connect with any payroll provider using our AI formatting tools. Technological advancements using AI and other modern solutions versus 20-year-old platforms. Automated workflows and a superior management experience.
How long does it usually take for onboarding?
Depending on the technical capabilities of the user, it can take between 4 hours and 4 weeks. Our team can approve new portals in minutes. The user does all the customizations and configurations once provided access.
How does Audit1 keep my data secure?
Security is our foundation. We run on Google Cloud with end-to-end encryption, JWT authentication, role-based access control, two-factor authentication, and SOC 2 compliant infrastructure with automated backups and disaster recovery.
Do you have an API?
Yes. Our REST API supports payroll report submission, employee sync, file status tracking, and real-time webhook events. Full documentation is available at docs.audit1.com.
What payroll formats do you support?
We normalize any payroll format automatically — CSV, Excel, XML, JSON, and proprietary layouts. Our ingestion engine uses Column Cognitive Recognition to detect the format, map 4,400+ header variants, and normalize data without manual configuration.
How does billing work?
Audit1 supports multiple billing models: cycle-based (employer pays per payroll cycle), flat fee (carrier pays monthly), and percentage-based (carrier pays a percentage of premium). We generate invoices automatically and collect funds via ACH or Plaid. For a plain-English walkthrough of billing, refunds, and corrections, see Billing & Refunds.
Can I be charged twice for the same payroll?
No. One payroll equals one charge. Our system is built so the same payroll can never turn into two charges — even if the same file reaches us more than once, we keep every copy on record but only ever bill once. If a duplicate charge ever slips through, we find it, tell you, and refund it. See our duplicate-charge promise.
How do refunds work, and do I need to do anything?
If you're owed money back, you don't need to do anything — if we find the mistake, we start the refund for you. We confirm the exact amount against your bank record, then send it straight back to the account the payment came from, usually within a few business days. If your own bank already reversed the charge, just let us know so we don't refund twice. Full details on Billing & Refunds.
What if a charge or premium amount is wrong?
Tell us — email [email protected] and you don't need to be sure or have proof. If a detail behind a charge is off (a class code, wage, rate, or state), we correct it and recalculate your premium to the exact right amount. If you paid too much it becomes a refund; if a little was still owed, we show you the difference clearly before collecting. We respond to every billing question within 15 business days, usually much faster.
How long does a payment take, and what about holidays?
Bank transfers (ACH) move on banking business days and usually clear within 1–2 business days of being sent. They don't process on weekends or U.S. federal bank holidays — when a holiday falls in the window, the charge simply moves to the next business day and we let you know in advance. You'll see a charge go from Scheduled → Processing → Collected. See the full payment lifecycle.
Why might a charge show as "On Hold"?
It's a built-in safety check, not a problem. If a charge looks unusually large compared to your history, we automatically pause it for a person to review before any money moves. While it's On Hold, nothing is taken; once we confirm it's correct it's released, and if it was wrong we fix it first. We do the same with payroll data — any line we can't verify is set aside so we never bill on unconfirmed data.
What is Express Report / Pay?
Express Report / Pay is the fastest way for employers to report payroll or pay their insurance premium — no login required. If you have an active workers' comp policy with one of our carrier partners, just enter your policy number and you can submit your payroll wages or make a monthly installment payment in under 60 seconds. Think of it like paying a utility bill online: no account needed, just your policy number and you're done. It uses the same validation engine as the full portal, so accuracy is identical.
